What size outboard do I need for my boat?

Choosing the right horsepower depends on several factors:

  • Boat length and weight

  • Hull design (aluminum, fiberglass, inflatable)

  • Intended use (fishing, cruising, watersports)

  • Number of passengers and gear

General guideline: We recommend staying within 70–85% of your boat's maximum rated horsepower (found on the capacity plate) for optimal performance and fuel efficiency.

Do I need to break in a new crate engine?

Yes, proper break-in is essential for engine longevity and warranty validity.

General break-in guidelines:

  • Use break-in oil with ZDDP (zinc) for flat-tappet camshafts

  • Start engine and verify oil pressure immediately

  • Run at varying RPMs (2,000–2,500) for the first 20–30 minutes—do not let it idle

  • Change oil and filter after initial break-in

  • First 500 miles: Avoid sustained wide-open throttle; vary RPM

Refer to the documentation provided with your engine for brand-specific break-in procedures.
