Glossary of Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| CI (Cubic Inches) | Engine displacement measured in cubic inches. 1 ci = 16.39 cc. |
| Displacement | Total volume swept by all pistons inside the cylinders. Larger displacement generally means more power. |
| Compression Ratio | Ratio of cylinder volume at bottom dead center to top dead center. Higher ratios = more power but require premium fuel. |
| EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) | Computer-controlled fuel delivery system for precise air/fuel mixture. |
| DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam) | Two camshafts per cylinder head (intake and exhaust) allowing high RPM performance. |
| Pushrod / OHV | Overhead valve design with camshaft in block. Traditional American V8 design, compact and torquey. |
| Hydraulic Roller Cam | Camshaft with roller lifters that requires no valve lash adjustment and offers improved performance. |
| Shaft Length (Outboard) | Distance from transom mounting bracket to anti-ventilation plate. Common lengths: 15″ (short), 20″ (long), 25″ (extra-long), 30″ (ultra-long). |
| Alternator Output | Electrical power generated, measured in amps. Higher output needed for boats with many electronics. |
| Gearcase | Lower unit containing gears and propeller shaft. Different gearcases optimize for speed, torque, or heavy loads. |
